Degrading Political Cartoon

Anonymous — Tue, 11/25/2003 - 04:42

On March 14, 2002 the Guelph Mercury paper had a political cartoon in their newspaper. It was of two rugged looking men sitting out on a porch of a shack. The first person say's there is not going to be tax on income, the other replies what is income? on the bottom of the porch is a sign that states Native Reserves.

If this cartoon offends you, I urge you to email them to let them know this is not acceptable.

They showed this same cartoon in the Prince George Citizen...upon receiving letters of complaints from their readers, they replied that it was not meant in any way to offend---but, to show empathy for the First Nations peoples' situations...sure, I bought that one!

Considering I've seen, more than once if I may add, bumper stickers on the backs of brand new vehicles which read "Keep working Whitey I could use a new truck", perhaps those becoming offended by this said cartoon should rethink the present situation!

Since Americans & Canadians r little educated about First Nations' peoples' and their own histories, they draw on what they know from the stereotypes. That cartoon should've read - how the west was taken; but how the west was won is the common myth justified not only thru cartoons, but a host of other crap used to perpetuate the myth. First Nations it seems, r the only "race" who can be degraded and ridiculed and it's okay; becuz it's all in good fun.
