Degrading Political Cartoon
Anonymous — Tue, 11/25/2003 - 04:42
On March 14, 2002 the Guelph Mercury paper had a political cartoon in their newspaper. It was of two rugged looking men sitting out on a porch of a shack. The first person say's there is not going to be tax on income, the other replies what is income? on the bottom of the porch is a sign that states Native Reserves.
If this cartoon offends you, I urge you to email them to let them know this is not acceptable.

Joyce (not verified) — Tue, 11/25/2003 - 04:42They showed this same cartoon in the Prince George Citizen...upon receiving letters of complaints from their readers, they replied that it was not meant in any way to offend---but, to show empathy for the First Nations peoples' situations...sure, I bought that one!

Annette (not verified) — Tue, 11/25/2003 - 04:42Considering I've seen, more than once if I may add, bumper stickers on the backs of brand new vehicles which read "Keep working Whitey I could use a new truck", perhaps those becoming offended by this said cartoon should rethink the present situation!

Havana (not verified) — Tue, 11/25/2003 - 04:42Since Americans & Canadians r little educated about First Nations' peoples' and their own histories, they draw on what they know from the stereotypes. That cartoon should've read - how the west was taken; but how the west was won is the common myth justified not only thru cartoons, but a host of other crap used to perpetuate the myth. First Nations it seems, r the only "race" who can be degraded and ridiculed and it's okay; becuz it's all in good fun.
