Native-American Cultural Survey

Anonymous — Sun, 07/13/2003 - 01:52

Hello Everyone,

I am a Graduate Student enrolled in Bloomsburg University, Pennsylvania in the Elementary Education Department. I am also a certified Elementary Teacher.

I am enrolled in a School and Society Class which has a cooperative learning requirement aimed at making multicultural learning centers and interviewing or inviting guest speakers to come to the class to discuss their cultures. My group decided to do our learning centers on the Native American Culture, but is running into some problems getting interviews or guest speakers due to the geographic area we live in.

Instead of having a guest speaker come into class, it was decided we would try to use technology to interview those of Native American descent. This would allow us a broader range of comments and feelings from different Tribes or Nations. If any of you would be able to take the time to answer the following questions and email the answers to
it would be greatly appreciated.

How do you view your culture as differing from the mainstream American culture?

What do you feel some of the major contributions are that Native-Americans have made to American Culture?

How well have Native-American children adapted to modern school systems?

What steps has your family or Nation taken to ensure that your culture has been preserved?

What forms of traditional entertainment have been preserved from your culture?

Have you see changes in the ways that Native-Americans are portrayed in the media and society in general?

Does children?s literature adequately represent your cultural ideals?

Do you have any other comments, feelings, or thoughts on the educational system or process?

Thank you for your time, and I hope that some of you will be able to complete this survey.
